Aerovolt Ventus I: Kite Control Unit

Mechatronics and Control Theory

Designed and fabricated a custom kite control unit as part of a AWE crosswind kite power system. Collaborated on a double and triple nested closed loop controller. System behavior was validated through extensive MATLAB simulations before conducting field tests at windy sites around Washington State.

Forklift-style lifting mechanism

Gettin' Loaded: Assistive Trunk Loading

Lead Screw and Guide Rail System Design

Designed and engineered a forklift style lifting mechanism for assisting in loading low level sedan trunks. Calculated needed torque and RPM of stepper motors for lifting needed load. Constructed lifting mechanism with a lead screw and lead nut, linear bearing guides, and wood.

Printer with insulation upgrades

FDM Printer Upgrade

Enclosure Temperature Control and Direct Feeding Solution

Determined needed components for printing flexible parts, compressible parts, and high CTE polymers. Installed insulation, power cable riser, and heating element for high warp plastics. Printed out a direct feeding solution for flexible thermoplastic printing.

Self-Hosted Modded Minecraft Server

Traffic Director and Tunnel Encryption

Hosted a heavily modded (>300 mods) Minecraft server for friends and family. Created a off-site VPS traffic director for home network DDoS protection. Used WireGuard protocols to encrypt and tunnel TCP and UDP traffic from VPS to the server computer.

Tailscale Tailnet

Personal VPN Service

Remote Access and Packet Direction

Used Tailscale to create my own VPN for remote access and privacy. Combined with a Raspberry Pi running Debian to send wake on LAN packets to my main computer. Set up network traffic exit node for securing unsafe connections, IP masking, and avoiding geoblocks.

Isolated Network and Service Monitoring Tool

Messaging Updates and Machine Isolation

Used a Raspberry Pi for a isolated Uptime Kuma client to monitor homelab services. Set up notification sending through Discord Webhooks to a private server and channel. A separate Raspberry Pi is used for DNS routing.

Self Hosted Cloud Storage and Music Streaming

Scanning Physical Media and Leveraging Network Attached Storage

Using Tailscale and a FileBrowser docker container, set up cloud storage for personal use. Scanned over 60 music albums and set up Navidrome for personal music streaming. Leveraged high speed NVMe storage for databases and high capacity network attached drives for mass storage.

Fan Cooling Model

MATLAB Heat Transfer Modeling with Graphical Representation

Used MATLAB to model a cooling system involving ice water, copper pipes, and a industrial fan. Graphically showed head loss, various pipe lengths, and heat transfer rate vs volumetric flow rate for the model. Experimented model against a real life model, which showed better than model performance due to condensation.

Tuning Controllers and Evaluating Controller Types

Used SIMULINK to create multiple controller models for a cruise controlled car. Compared 4 different controller type outputs and their overall performance. Tuned closed loop P, PI, and PID controllers for performance.

Using the game Hard Chip, learned logic gates, MOS, and ALUs. Started from modeling metal oxide semiconductors, to making logic gates, to making, modeing, and testing an 8bit ALU. Took detailed notes on logic gate and ALU structure.
